Tips for job applications: How to write a personal statement or CV

As you approach the end of your studies, you will start to look at opportunities for your first year as working as a Speech and Language Therapist. Here are some top tips to consider when you are putting together your personal statement and/or CV for prospective employers:

  • Start strong by highlighting your key strengths and achievements
  • Research the company, in particular their values and objectives, to make sure these align with yours and so you can bespoke your application
  • Think about what you have learned and what the impact has been, rather than just listing responsibilities
  • Show some insight into some of the current issues for Speech and Language Therapy in the UK at the moment
  • Check for formatting and spelling with a fine tooth comb

You can always reach out to organisations with any questions in advance of your application and/or interview to ask any informal questions so you are as prepared as you can be.

Good luck with your first steps into this fantastic profession!

A successful speech sound workshop for SBT

Some of the exercises at the SBT speech sound workshop

On Friday afternoon, the SBT team met for a refresher workshop on phonetic transcription and speech sound work. Discussions were based around a recent article in IJLCD, which looks at the experience of clinicians on the ground working with speech sound disorders.

We were really lucky to be joined by two students from University of Essex and City, University of London, to lend their views and much more recent clinical learning about this particular area.

Key findings from the team were that in general we need to do more transcription practice to build our confidence

Going forward we would really like to work on refreshing knowledge of vowels and do more connected speech transcription.

Watch this space for our thoughts on further clinical workshops!
